The Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency (BASEPA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service, Bauchi Command, has supervised the execution of community service by individuals convicted for violating the state’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The offenders were arrested by BASEPA enforcement officers for failing to comply with the monthly sanitation exercise and were subsequently arraigned before the Sanitation Mobile Court. The court convicted them and sentenced them to community service in accordance with the state’s environmental sanitation laws.
The convicts carried out the court-ordered service at Wunti Market, where they cleared drainages, swept the market environment and evacuated refuse as part of efforts to improve environmental hygiene.
Speaking during the monitoring exercise, the Head of Enforcement of BASEPA, who led the monitoring team, said the exercise was aimed at ensuring that the convicts fully complied with the court’s directive while also serving as a deterrent to others who may disregard the monthly sanitation exercise.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to strict enforcement of environmental sanitation laws, stressing that BASEPA would continue to ensure compliance in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment across the state.
He also urged residents to actively participate in the monthly sanitation exercise, describing it as a collective responsibility necessary for the health and wellbeing of all citizens.
BASEPA expressed appreciation to officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service, security agencies and members of the public for their continued support and cooperation in promoting environmental cleanliness throughout Bauchi State.
