The Bauchi State Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has declared an outbreak of cholera in 13 local government areas of state, while suspecting 398 cases.
In a letter dated 1st of August and addressed to partners and donor agencies, the Ministry informed the public and development partners, that “following an increase in reported cases of Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) and the laboratory confirmation of cholera cases, the Honourable Commissioner for Health & Social Welfare, based on the recommendation of the state epidemiology team and public health emergency operation center, has officially declared a cholera outbreak in the State.”
According to the Ministry, the declaration was made in line with the International Health Regulations (2005), the National Technical Guidelines for Cholera Preparedness and Response, and the established public health emergency management procedures of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.
“Cholera Situation Analysis: As of 31 July 2026, the State has recorded 398 suspected cholera cases across 13 Local Government Areas (LGAs). 16 mortalities have been recorded with a case fatality rate of (4%). The six most affected LGAs are: Toro (231 cases), Alkaleri (46 cases), Kirfi (46 cases), Ganjuwa (21 cases), Bauchi (14 cases) and Tafawa Balewa 14 cases,” the Ministry said.
When contacted on the phone to confirm the letter circulating on social media, the Commissioner for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Sani Muhammad Dambam said “Okay, I will check” while ending the conversation and has yet to deny the correspondence.
Also, Public News Nigeria contacted the Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed on his WhatsApp to confirm the development. He read the enquiry and has not denied the development.
