The Senate has approved the sum of N2.285 trillion as the 2026 budget for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Abuja.
The approval followed the consideration and adoption of a report presented by the Senate Committee on the FCT.
Presenting the report, the Vice Chairman of the committee, Senator Austin Akobundu (Abia Central), disclosed that N1.741 trillion, representing about 76 per cent of the total budget estimate, was allocated to capital expenditure, while N165.7 billion was earmarked for personnel costs and N378.231 billion for overhead expenditure.
Senator Akobundu explained that the combined personnel and overhead costs, totaling N544.6 billion, represent about 23 percent of the proposed budget.
He said the 2026 budget proposal is largely focused on infrastructure development in the FCT, as well as the provision of essential utilities and facilities for residents across the six area councils.
During debate on the appropriation bill, many senators urged the chamber to give it speedy passage, noting that the Minister of the FCT, Mr Nyesom Wike, has been working hard to transform Abuja and deserves encouragement.
The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau (Kano North), commended the FCT Minister for what he described as impressive performance in the territory.
He urged the Senate to approve the budget without delay, stressing that Wike has shown commitment to making Abuja one of the best cities in the world.
Following the passage of the appropriation bill for third reading, the Senate requested the FCTA to include its projected revenue profile for the fiscal year as a key component of future budget documents.
