By John Smith, Abuja

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have repelled an attempted terrorist infiltration of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Kasuwan Daji in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, killing several attackers, rescuing nine abducted civilians and forcing the assailants to retreat.

The Nigerian Army said the attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, August 2, 2026, when the terrorists attempted to exploit the cover of darkness to breach the military base.

According to a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, vigilant troops detected the movement of the terrorists and responded with coordinated and overwhelming firepower, frustrating the assault.

The Army said reinforcements were immediately deployed after the initial exchange of gunfire, while troops launched a pursuit of the fleeing terrorists, who had abducted an unspecified number of residents from nearby communities during the attack.

The statement disclosed that the troops successfully rescued nine of the abducted civilians, who were recovered safely.

The military, however, confirmed the loss of one Army officer and one Police officer during the fierce gun battle. It added that two soldiers sustained gunshot wounds and were airlifted for advanced medical treatment, noting that both personnel are in stable condition.

Troops have since secured the area and commenced exploitation operations to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ casualties while ensuring the safety of residents.

The Army described the failed infiltration as another major operational setback for terrorist groups operating in the North-West, saying the outcome reflected the growing difficulty armed groups face in launching coordinated attacks against combat-ready troops.

It also dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that six security personnel were killed, clarifying that only one Army officer and one police officer lost their lives in the operation.

The military reaffirmed that Operation FANSAN YAMMA remains committed to sustaining offensive operations against terrorist groups, protecting vulnerable communities and dismantling criminal networks until lasting peace and security are restored across the North-West.
