The newly elected executives of the University of Maiduguri Alumni Association, Borno State Chapter, have been inaugurated with a charge to build a strong network that would support the development of the institution and its members.

The inauguration, organised by the association’s Global Secretariat, was held on Monday at El-Kanemi Hall, University of Maiduguri, before hundreds of alumni members from across the globe.

The Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Shehu Liberty, described the event as historic, saying it marked the first national-level election of the association in more than 50 years.

Liberty congratulated the new executives and commended the Global President and the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mele Laminu, for their contributions toward strengthening the association.

He urged the new leadership to work diligently and leave behind a legacy worthy of remembrance.

“We will partner with you and complement the responsibility vested on your shoulders. We urge you to step up and leave behind a good legacy that everyone will remember forever,” he said.

Liberty also noted the growing contributions of government and individuals to the development of the university, citing President Bola Tinubu and Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno.

He recalled that Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa, while in Maiduguri for the North-East Governors’ Forum meeting, visited the Department of History and donated N150 million to lecturers and N20 million to students.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Mohammed Musa Saleh described the Borno Chapter as one of the most important arms of the association outside the Federal Capital Territory, urging its leaders to work toward greater achievements.

Global President, Baba Shettima Kukawa, said the election was conducted credibly under the supervision of the Caretaker and Electoral Committees.

He pledged the global leadership’s support to the chapter and urged the new executives to carry all members along.

The newly inaugurated Chairman, Dr Usman Ali Busuguma, thanked members, friends and family for their support, pledging commitment to the success of the association.

He appealed to members of the executive council to work together to steer its affairs with dedication, unity and integrity.
