Gombe State Command of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), on Wednesday, joined the commemoration of the 2026 World Bicycle Day, urging the residents to embrace motorcycles as a mode of transportation to achieve a healthy body and environment.
This year’s theme: ‘Boosting Urban with the Bicycle’ was in compliance with the United Nations resolution declaring 3rd June annually as World Bicycle Day.
The Command organised the commemoration exercise to promote cycling as a safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly mode of transport.
The event aligned with the Safe System approach and the African Road Safety Charter which came into force on 12 March, 2026.
The exercise witnessed active participation from the Sector Commander, CC Samson Kaura,
Officers and Marshals of RS3.2 Gombe Sector Command,
Representatives of Special Marshals, Gombe Sector Command Unit, NYSC corps members attached to FRSC Gombe and Media representatives for press coverage.
The event commenced with a press briefing at the Command addressed by the Sector Commander, CC Samson Kaura, alongside representatives of the Special Marshals and NYSC members.
He emphasised FRSC’s commitment to promoting non-motorised transport to reduce traffic congestion and emissions as well as religion and sensitized the public on safety precautions for cyclists: use of helmets, reflective jackets, obeying traffic rules, and avoiding use of mobile phones while riding.
The Sector Commander called on motorists to “Share the Road” and give cyclists adequate space in line with the 1.5-meter safe passing rule” just as he reiterated that cyclists are vulnerable road users and must be protected under the African Road Safety Charter.
In their respective comments, Special Marshals and NYSC Representatives, pledged continued advocacy for cycling safety within their networks.
Following the press briefing, the combined team of officers, Special Marshals, and NYSC members embarked on a bicycle ride.
The route of the bicycle ride was from the Command to Lafiyawo Trailer Park and Return to Command, covering spproximately 6km round trip amidst joy and happiness expresed by the participants.
